The Story Behind The Hour Glass

A Modern Twist on Timeless Elegance

Nestled on Liardet Street, The Hour Glass has been a beloved part of New Plymouth’s dining scene since 2013.

Originally established as Montrose, The Hour Glass was lovingly transformed by Mark and AJ over the past 12 years into the warm and welcoming spot that locals have come to know and love. It’s the kind of place where, from your second visit, our team will remember your favourite drink and greet you like family. That’s why our loyal regulars, fondly known as “The Tuesday Tipplers” and the “GGGGGGGGG,” have been returning since we first opened.

At The Hour Glass, we take pride in offering a diverse selection of beers, quality wines, and classic cocktails. With four beer taps featuring a rotation of local breweries and a special guest tap, there’s always something new to suit every taste. Our boutique wine list pairs beautifully with our tapas menu, perfect for sharing or enjoying a leisurely meal. Whether you’re craving hearty platters or our famous eye fillet steak, we cater to every preference.

Our space provides three distinct areas for your enjoyment: an intimate bar for cosy conversations, a covered outdoor space for alfresco dining, and a snug side room, perfect for group gatherings. Since reopening after lockdown, we’ve been touched by the outpouring of support from our community. We love hosting beer and wine tastings, charity events, and more to keep the vibrant spirit alive.

Now, under the care of new owners Jenna and Bodie, The Hour Glass continues to be your go-to spot at 49 Liardet Street. We’re open from Tuesday to Sunday, starting at 2 pm and from 12 pm on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Whether you’re popping in for a casual drink, enjoying a memorable meal, or booking a group event, you’ll always be met with friendly service, great food, and the warm atmosphere that has made The Hour Glass a favourite among locals and visitors alike.

Meet Jenna Sisson

Owner & Hospitality Manager
Jenna Sisson

Introducing Jenna Sisson, the heart and soul behind The Hour Glass. With over 30 years of experience in hospitality, Jenna’s journey from a young girl mopping floors in a small-town café to a leader in New Zealand’s hospitality scene is a testament to her passion and dedication.

She has built a career rooted in creating warm, welcoming spaces for people to enjoy, all while honing her craft and embracing every opportunity to grow. Now, as the proud owner of The Hour Glass, Jenna brings her wealth of knowledge, approachable style, and love for wine to continue offering exceptional experiences for every guest who walks through the doors.

Jenna Sisson brings over 30 years of passion, experience, and dedication to the hospitality industry. Starting at the young age of 12 in Waverley, her first job was washing floors at a local café. From there, Jenna quickly moved up to waitressing, discovering her love for hospitality and the challenges and excitement that come with it.

Over the years, Jenna has gained a wealth of knowledge in all aspects of the industry, from cafés and restaurants to stadiums and hotels. She’s worked in the kitchen, front of house, and management, eagerly embracing every opportunity to learn. Her career journey has taken her from the small town café she once managed to leading large-scale events, including coordinating for the All Blacks during the Rugby World Cup in 2011.

A key part of Jenna’s passion lies in the world of wine. She has spent years focusing on New Zealand’s incredible wine industry, learning about the unique terroir, innovative winemakers, and world-class wines the country has to offer. Her goal is to make wine accessible and fun for everyone, breaking down the idea that wine should be stuffy or intimidating. “Wine is personal,” Jenna believes. “There’s no right or wrong—just what you enjoy.”

Jenna’s experience spans working at notable venues like Fresha, Arborio, and as the Food and Beverage Manager at Novotel. Her leadership roles in the hospitality sector, including managing multiple venues like Auto Lodge and Plymouth International, have equipped her with the skills and expertise to create exceptional dining experiences.

Now, after decades of dedication to the industry, Jenna is excited to take on her newest challenge as the owner of The Hour Glass. She looks forward to continuing the tradition of excellence while bringing her own friendly, approachable style to the bar and restaurant.

Join Jenna and the team at The Hour Glass—where you’re sure to feel right at home.
